“It was an unbelievable innings. Most notably was how calm he appeared and how he showed maturity beyond his years,” said Ashwell Prince, coach of the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras, about the 114 off 119 balls struck by Kyle Verreynne, which propelled the visitors to a three-wicket win with three balls to spare against the VKB Knights at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

“When we were in trouble on 15 for three, Jason Smith calmed me down in a sticky situation and batted superbly,” said a humble Verreynne.

With six runs to score at the start of the 49th over, Verreynne struck a superb extra cover drive for four. Dane Paterson struck a delivery over extra cover to seal the win with three balls to go.

Pite van Biljon, the VKB Knights captain, said afterwards they finished about 10 runs short. Probed about Verreynne, he said in every game against the VKB Knights he shone this season. “He seems to have our number and batted beautifully.”

“He seems to find a way and it was an unbelievable knock,” said Verreynne’s captain Dane Piedt about the wicket-keeper batsman’s innings.

Verreynne added 50 plus runs with Smith (40), Aviwe Mgijima (38) and Piedt (21).

“Kyle showed a lot of character in pressure situations. GF Linde bowled with good shape and delivered bowling of international quality,” said Piedt after the match.

“We were off to the worst possible start because the Malan brothers usually deliver for us, but thankfully Verreynne and Smith steadied the ship.

“The lower order knocked the ball around and we knew we had to do a lot of running,” said Piedt.

“It was a matter of ebb and flow and fortunately we finished on the right side of the scoreboard,” Piedt added.

Prince said at no time during his innings did Verreynne show signs of nervousness. The three partnerships of beyond 50 of Verreynne with the middle- and lower order contributed massively to the win.

“We discussed during the week the importance of partnerships. ’We had a good effort by Jason and Kyle that gave us stability, then Aviwe batted with some real intent and gave us impetus. Kyle, GF and Dane hit the ground running and did not allow a lot of dot balls. And Paterson came in and finished it off for us.”

“The win will give us a confidence boost but I believe we also played well in Paarl against the Warriors and either game could have gone the other way,” Prince concluded.

The World Sports Betting Cape Cobras are next in action, with two home games in a row – on Friday against the Hollywoodbets Dolphins at Eurolux Boland Park and then against the bizhub Highveld Lions at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn.
